As we highlighted in August a CDOT construction project which aims to improve the Highway 24 and 31st Street intersection has had a major impact on trail, bicycle and pedestrian access in the area. Last Friday CDOT announced that the midland trail, between 31st Street and Ridge road would be reopened. It appears that the stretch from the mobile home park entrance at Golden Lane Rd to 31st street will remain closed until new signals are installed in April.
The recommended detour (coming from COS) is to turn onto Colorado Ave, turn right on 36th St, left onto Pikes Peak, then right onto Columbia to connect with El Paso into Manitou Springs.
While connectivity has not yet been completely restored we look forward to the completion of this project and the Westside Avenue Action Plan this spring. As part of the WAAP project, that we’ve been following since 2017, a new Midland Trail connection under Colorado Ave along with bike lanes and a trail plaza at Ridge Rd will offer vastly improved non-motorized connections on the far west side of Colorado Springs, connecting into Manitou Springs. We hope to bring you more information as both of these projects near completion in the coming months.
