Cycling Basics 101
Warm fall weather and blue skies greeted participants of the Bike Colorado Springs education team outdoor class at the Banning Lewis Ranch Retreat October 30, 2021. This occasion marked Bike COS’ first ever Cycling Basics 101 class. The curriculum used for the class is part of the League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling bicycle safety education program, which is now offered FREE online here. The online class can be completed at one’s own pace and from the comfort of home.
The bicycle safety concepts covered during Cycling Basics 101 range from how to prepare for a bike ride including the ABC Quick Check, to the basics of riding in a group, to include multiuse trail etiquette, and how to navigate our roadways safely. More advanced concepts are also covered such as how to avoid the most common crashes.
To put it all together, participants are also given an opportunity to put their newly learned safety bicycling basics to practice during a short, no drop ride alongside League Certified Instructors. As the class instructor, Larry Wilson points out, “Folks can really see what a difference this knowledge can make to increase a new or intermediate cyclists confidence level riding on the road or in a group setting. And you are not alone, we’ve got other organizations in town offering additional opportunities to practice skills and help you get more comfortable riding around town or in groups.”
Bike Colorado Springs appreciates the opportunity to teach others about bicycle safety, which in the end makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
