🛠 Sinton Trail Repaving
(Late July – Fall)
Project Start delayed until late July pending required permits. The Sinton Trail between Chestnut St. and Holland Park will close for approximately three months starting June 30th.
Improvements Coming:
- New Surface: Upgrading from asphalt to more durable concrete
- Fixes: Eliminating the problematic dip and uneven pavement near Chestnut (goodbye to that awkward dip under the pipe!)
- Alignment: Smoother curves and better sight lines
- Drainage: drainage and grade improvements along the whole trail
- Chestnut Underpass Access Paving: Concrete for the access to the underpass under Chestnut where gravel is now
Future Phases:
Holland Park to Centennial – Trail will be addressed during a planned stormwater, timeline depends on FEMA funding.
Centennial to GoG Road – be dependent on funding availability, but likely PPRTA 3 dollars, since other corridors are being addressed.
We’ll share timelines when available.
Future Future Project: The Centennial Underpass reconstruction approved by voters as part of PPRTA 3 is still in planning stages – more details coming.

🚨 Van Buren Rail Crossing Closure
(June 9-19)
TRAIL Crossing has reopened while some work is still occurring in the area
This 10-day closure will require a detour for Pikes Peak Greenway users but the City has prioritized keeping the crossing of the Rock Island Trail open to the PopCycle Bridge during the project, phasing paving and striping to allow this and minimize detour lengths.
Key Impacts:
- Complete Closure: No through access for Pikes Peak Greenway between June 9-19
- Critical Connection Lost: Affects Pikes Peak Greenway Trail users
- Planned Detour: Riders may need to add .5 to 1 mile detours to their routes
Coming Improvements:
- Rail Crossing: The Pikes Peak Greenway Rail Crossing will be improved to smooth this connection
- Improved Greenway Connection: The Pikes Peak Greenway Connection between Van Buren and the PopCycle Bridge will be repaved and restriped, addressing cracking and degraded asphalt, improving trail and trail crossing surface.
Detour Options:
While official detours aren’t finalized, prepare for:
1️⃣Rock Island Trail: Connect via Cascade Ave (expect some elevation gain)
2️⃣Monument Valley Park Route: Connect via Cascade Ave (expect some elevation gain)
3️⃣Mesa Springs Greenway: Alternative North-South connector
4️⃣Chestnut St: Urban bike route without bike lanes
Important Notes:
- Bike to Work Day (June 25): City aims to reopen by then
- Stay Updated: Check COS Parks social media (Instagram/Facebook) for for official detour maps
- Plan Extra Time: This is a disruptive closure be we thank the City for keeping the Rock Island Trail connected

🚧 8th Street Construction – Bridge Work Begins June 9
As we previously shared, the 8th Street improvement project is now moving into its next phase, with bridge construction starting June 9. This will impact trail users, pedestrians, and drivers—here’s what to expect.
Major Change: Trail Bridge Removal
🗓️ June 12 (overnight): The Midland Trail bridge over Fountain Creek will be removed (and put into storage) to make way for the new widened 8th Street bridge with an attached multi-use path. Trail users will be rerouted to the west side of 8th street to avoid construction activities.
Detours During Work:
- 🚴 Trail users: Detour to west side of 8th St
- 🚙 Motorists: Right turn from 8th St to Hwy 24
Construction Timeline:
- June–Early 2026: Bridge widening (adding a northbound lane + attached multi-use path)
What to Expect:
- 🚧 Lane shifts & occasional closures, but roadway bridge remains open
- 🏪 Business access will stay open
- ℹ️ Stay updated: coloradosprings.gov/8thstreet
🚴 Rider Tips for June Closures
- Check COS Parks social media (Instagram/Facebook) for last-minute updates
- Try alternate routes – early to find your best option (interactive closure/detour map)
- Allow extra time – especially for commutes during closure periods
We’ll update this post as we receive more details from the city. While these closures are inconvenient, they’ll result in much better trail infrastructure for years to come!
