Helmet

We recommend wearing a helmet, and making sure that fits well. In the unlikely event of a crash we want to be sure that our heads our safe.

Be Prepared

You don’t need special clothes to go for a ride, you just need to be prepared for the weather and comfortable. Be sure to check the weather before you go out a pack an extra layer in case the weather changes.

Bring water, a snack and a lock if you plan to leave your bike unattended.

Be Visible

Now that the days are starting to get a bit shorter be sure that others can see you and that you can see your way. A white headlight is required by law but we recommend a headlight and a tail light when riding at night.

If riding at night also avoid wearing dark clothes as it makes it harder for other road users to see you.

Make Sure you Bike is ready to roll with an ABC check

A – Air
B – Brakes
C – Chain

One of our favorite bike bloggers Ayesha McGowan (AKA: A Quick Brown Fox) has put together a great Bike Commuting Basics guide. And we love her ride like a hippo mindset

Ride like a hippo means to ride like a big assertive hippo, take the lane when necessary, and be predictable and deliberate while riding.
